But I can interact with them just as easy from my windows OS that from my Ubuntu OS. Sure almost every server out there is running on linux. The only thing being that you can't do DS stuff on a Windows box. If you're doing lite data science (traditional machine learning + stats to solve business problems), then Windows is probably going to be the least disruptive in a Microsoft ecosystem organization. Let's soften his statement: if you are doing hardcore data science (read: heavy computing power, gigantic data sets, no structure, deep learning, etc.), then linux is probably going to be your best bet.

> Windows is great for general use (excel stuff, powerpoints, home use etc) but for actual data science you really need linux because all the tools are for linux (servers are virtually all running linux) u/baconshoplifter said it a bit too dramatically, but I don't think he's that far off: The other big problem is that not everyone in your team may be familiar/comfortable with Linux, whereas everyone on earth can handle Windows.

The problem is that it's rare that an organization is Linux based, so you will certainly have connection points to the rest of your company that rely on Windows (or Mac).

#Ubuntu vs mac for data science bi how to
It's more lightweight, more reproducible, cheaper, you are not subject to horrible updates that ruin everything, setting up environments appropriately is child's play (once you know how to do it), and moving back and forth between local and cloud becomes completely seamless (and/or cheaper). I would imagine that all other things equal, a linux ecosystem would kick the pants out of everything else. I would argue that your integration to the rest of the company is what becomes important. I think a lot of people are missing the biggest part of your question, i.e.,
